Renault Wind Roadster and Lexus CT 200h Hybrid

Selling a car through advertising isn’t as easy as you might think. What good is it showing your product nimbly taking on Alpine twists and turns when your competitors are doing the same thing? Here are two ads that don’t really break the mould, but try something a little different.
First up is this one for the open-top Renault Wind. I’m a big fan of this car; I think it’s a funky and decidedly French take on the compact convertible. Still, there’s something disturbingly I Am Legend about this particular ad from the firm Publicis Conseil. The eerily vacant streets, the shuttered windows and the presence of a dog sitting on a street corner all at up to the expectation that Will Smith should be running through the scene pursued by monsters.
Next is the spot for the Lexus CT 200h hybrid hatch by firm Saatchi & Saatchi. A little boy sits in the back seat while his mother asks him the sounds various modes of transport make. It’s very cute, especially if you have children. You can check out both these ads right here and then leave a comment in the section below if you wish.

Audi Challenges BMW, Mercedes and Lexus with new Ad Campaign

Audi of America has launched a new advertising campaign that will most likely generate a similar response from the competition in the premium segment. Under the tagline “Car Carrier”, the two Audi commercials feature a BMW owner that goes nuts when he sees a truck full of brand new automotive metal from Ingolstadt.

The driver gets out of his BMW 3-Series through the sunroof and jumps on the truck only to discover that the cars have already been claimed for by people like himself (i.e. desperate to get their hands on an Audi). Therefore, he has no choice but to settle for the passenger seat.
The voice in the ad explains the situation: “More people are leaving BMW, Mercedes and Lexus for Audi than ever before”.
Fact or marketing fiction (we incline towards with the latter), expect to see a reply in the form of a campaign from one of Audi’s rival brands in the very near future. But until then, scroll down to take a look at Audi’s TV spots.

Lexus Loses Big In the U.S.A

It took eleven years for Lexus to earn the title of top dog of the U.S. luxury car market, and roughly the same amount of time for it to lose it. As a result of parent company Toyota’s accelerator pedal recall saga and the fifty percent drop in production capacity caused by the Tōhoku earthquake, old guard automakers BMW and Mercedes-Benz have left the Japanese upstart gasping for air in third place.

According to automotive forecaster IHS,Mercedes-Benz will most probably sell 254,100 cars and SUVs in the States topping BMW’s estimated deliveries of 250,400 units. Lexus is projected to drop to third place with 192,900 sales.
Eric Noble, President of automotive consulting firm The Car Lab, recently told Bloomberg news: “The house was on fire at Lexus before the earthquake hit. If the current situation wakes them up to that, then some good may come from it.”
Though it has sunk a lot of money into the LFA supercar and CT 200h hybrid batch, Lexus’ supposed mainstay models – the IS, GS and LS ranges of sedans – have all been stagnating. Its rivals meanwhile have been ramping up U.S. production, developing new or refreshing older models and sinking hundreds of millions in improving its stateside manufacturing facilities.
Bill Visnic, an analyst at Edmunds says: “Lexus is in a sort of lull in their product cadence. [The Lexus GS] is aging and doesn’t hold a candle to what BMW and Mercedes are doing.”
Though Lexus has long held a strategic position in the U.S. market, its sales outside North America have been lacking. As was the case with Volvo and safety, reliability is now pretty much a given and excellence in customer service has become integral to the vast majority of the world’s luxury automakers. With Lexus’ current woes, the result is, as you’d expect.
As Alexander Edwards, President of consumer research company Strategic Vision says: “For people who were sitting on the fence about Lexus, we saw them remove the brand from the shopping list.”
Take Audi for instance, a long-time market leader in both Europe and China. The brand’s recently revamped A6 model is doing well overseas, and the German automaker hopes it’ll have similar success stateside. Alexander Edwards again:
“The most interesting change hasn’t been with those three, but with Audi. Audi has seen very strong movement forward, capturing some aspirational [sic] interest among Gen-Y buyers, the younger consumer group that everyone wants to attract.”
The battle lines have been drawn, and three titans are ready to fight for the number one spot in 2012. Unfortunately, it looks as if Lexus will not be one of them.

Toyota Overtakes BMW as World's Most Valuable Brand

The BrandZ Top 100 annual study revealed that Toyota is once again the world's most valuable auto brand, after losing the position last year to BMW due to the massive recall campaign. Toyota saw an 11 percent increase in its brand value, which is now rated at $24.2 billion (€16.85 billion). The research company Millward Brown, whose global brand director said Toyota’s recall had not affected consumers’ confidence in the carmaker, compiled the ranking. Read more »

2011 Lexus IS 250C and IS 350C: Car Seat Check

The 2011 Lexus IS 250C is the hardtop convertible version of the IS 250, a sporty sedan. While the IS sedan can hold five passengers, the IS 250C carries four. There’s also a significant difference in rear legroom between the two models. The sedan has 30.6 inches of legroom in the second row; the convertible has only 25.9 inches, which made it difficult to install rear-facing child-safety seats in it. Our results can also be applied to the 2011 Lexus IS 350C, which offers a more powerful V-6 engine than its 250C sibling.
For the Car Seat Check, we use a Graco SnugRide 30 rear-facing infant-safety seat, a Britax Roundabout convertible child-safety seat and Graco high-back TurboBooster seat. The front seats are adjusted to a comfortable position for a 6-foot driver and a 5-foot-8 passenger. The three child seats are installed in the second row. The booster seat sits behind the driver’s seat, and the infant seat and convertible seats are installed behind the passenger seat. We also install the infant seat in the second row’s middle seat with the booster and convertible in the outboard seats to see if three car seats will fit. If there’s a third row, we install the booster seat and a forward-facing convertible.
Here’s how the 2011 IS 250C and IS 350C did in MotherProof.com’s Car Seat Check:
Latch system: There are two sets of lower Latch anchors in the convertible’s two-person backseat. The anchors are deeply buried in the seat bight, where the back and bottom cushions meet. The seats have significant seat bolsters and the anchors are set close together, making it difficult to install a car seat.
Two tether anchors sit under hinged covers at the base of the roll bars. The covers make it difficult to use the anchors. We had to flop the head restraints forward to get at the anchors.
image
Booster seat: The seat bolsters helped give our high-back booster seat a good fit in the convertible. However, the limited legroom in the second row will create problems for a child sitting in the seat. The seat belt buckles are well-anchored and sit high enough that kids in boosters can easily use them.
image
image
Convertible seat: To get the rear-facing convertible to fit in the IS 250C, we had to move the front passenger seat all the way forward. This left no room for the front passenger. We also had fit problems with the forward-facing convertible. The rear seatback has little to no recline, which pushed the convertible far forward. At least half of the convertible’s base was off of the bottom seat cushion. This shows yet again that not every car seat fits in every car.
image
Infant-safety seat: We also had to move the front passenger seat all the way forward to get this rear-facing car seat to fit in the convertible. As with the rear-facing convertible, there wasn’t enough room for the front passenger.
image
How many car seats fit? 2, but they’ll need to be forward-facing
Editor’s note: For three car seats—infant-safety seat, convertible and booster seats—to fit in a car, our criteria is that a child sitting in the booster seat must be able to reach the seat belt buckle. Parents should also remember that they can use the Latch system or a seat belt to install a car seat.

2011 Lexus IS F – Short Take Road Test

2011 Lexus IS F
In revising the IS F’s suspension, Lexus reinvents its sport sedan.
The corporate line at Lexus is that the IS F was never intended to dethrone the BMW M3 as the world’s greatest sports sedan. We, like the general public, never believed it. Just look at the two cars’ spec sheets: Both are based on their respective company’s entry-level sedan; both have special, 400-plus-hp V-8s shoehorned up front; and both have big brakes, ultra-high-performance tires, upgraded sport seats, and so on.

2011 Lexus IS250 F Sport Review & Test Drive

One of the more exciting aspects of Toyota can be found in their Lexus line of vehicles starting with the new 2011 Lexus IS250. The new Lexus IS has been a very successful sports sedan keeping its aggressive finesse while receiving a minor face-lift for 2011.
My new Ultrasonic Blue 2011 Lexus IS250 was optioned with a new F-Sport package that incorporates a firmer suspension upgrade, heated sports seats with microfiber inserts, 18-inch dark-finished wheels, grill inserts and an F-Sport badge on the side of the front fender. One quick look and this Lexus IS250 F Sport package closely resembles the top-of-the-line performance oriented ISF. Although the lackluster 2.5-liter V6 producing only 204 horsepower and 185 pound-feet of torque refracts any bit of real ‘sport’ from the IS250, it still comes off as a capable performer visually and in the turns.

Despite the Lexus IS250 being in need of much more power, the ride is firm and stable at high speeds.  It is almost deceiving because the vehicle feels as if it should have much more power. This is mostly due to the F Sport package which meshes better with the IS350’s 3.5-liter V6 with 306 horsepower. Luckily, the IS250’s V6 engine is as smooth as silk but does have a bit of weight, 3,455 lbs to lug around. Normal driving is never a problem as the small V6 does not seem to strain much with its well-managed and soft-shifting 6sp automatic transmission.

The larger 18-inch wheels with 255-series tires on the rear aided in the IS250’s handling abilities. In other words, the IS250 would have no problem handling 100 more horses just as it is with the F Sport package. Not to mention, they look great with the Ultra Sonic Blue paint job commonly found on the monstrous 417 horsepower Lexus ISF.

The interior is a bit cramped for someone just over 6 feet tall though, it’s manageable. At times I would hit my head on the roof but it is nothing a simple adjustment of the 8-way power sport seats can’t fix. Fit and finish of Lexus interiors are always top-notch as it is in the new 2011 Lexus IS250. Just about every aspect of the Lexus IS250’s interior screams high-quality. The same can be said about the build quality of the new IS having a quiet cabin that is never disturbed with odd sounds or rattles. The Lexus IS’s interior gives its German competition – the BMW 3 Series, Benz C-Class and Audi A4 – a serious run for the money.
The new gauge cluster in the IS250 is somewhat of an evolution from the chronograph styled gauges in the outgoing IS300 from the early 2000’s. The dials are big, bright and easy to read in a nice white-light, which is very Lexus-Esq. The adjustable speed limiting orange LED light ring is a nice touch also warning you that you have passed a manually pre-set speed limit.

In the rear things get even more cramped in the new IS250 with only 30.6 inches of rear leg room, 4 inches less than the current BMW 3 Series sedan.  A rear pass-through is only offered for the extra cargo storage instead of folding rear seats. Fortunately, trunk space is at 13 cubic feet which is about the normal capacity for this class of vehicle.
Making up for the small seating areas would be the Lexus IS250’s comfortable ride and ease of drivability. The power steering is somewhat predictable.  The variable power assist does not communicate the road to the driver as you would expect from a car that looks this sporty. The steering, however, does a good job of firming during highway speeds versus parking maneuvers.

Sales figures of the new Lexus IS would possibly prove it is appealing more for its sporty good-looks overlooking its lack of horsepower. I can say driving the new Lexus IS250 is a pleasure and more of a practical choice considering the more powerful IS350 starts at almost $7,000 more than the IS250. Gas figures for the IS250 are not much different than many other cars with a lot more power. I was able to get a decent 25 mpg in the city and near 31 mpg on the highway, just as the EPA estimates. Mpg figures for the IS250 are 24 mpg city and 30 mpg highway.
Automotive enthusiasts will find a lot of sex-appeal from the new Lexus IS250 with the F Sport package but walk way slightly disappointed with its lack of power and at the same time well-pleased with its nimble handling. At $36,630 for my IS250 F Sport package tester, Lexus remains to stay within reason for a manufacturer that has proven quality and almost unmatched fit and finish. Comparable configurations from BMW would cost $3,000 more but will also provide better performance.
