Toyota Sales Plunge More than 33% in May, Chrysler Group up by 10%

The numbers for U.S. auto sales for the month of May are out and as expected, Japanese automakers continue to be hit hard by the ongoing production disruptions caused by the March 11 earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disaster in their home market. As a result, Toyota’s sales plunged 33.4% over the year-ago month to 108,387 units, while rivaling Honda saw its sales fall 22.5% to 90,773 vehicles, Nissan recorded a 9.1% drop to 76,148 units and Mazda 17,875 vehicles, down 20.9%.

General Motors dealers in the United States delivered 221,192 vehicles in May posting a decline of 1%, while the Ford Motor Co. said its sales decreased by 0.1% to 192,253 cars, trucks and SUVs.

New Nissan Leaf Commercial Mocks the Chevy Volt for Using Gasoline

Electric carmakers are trying hard to promote their products, with the environmentally friendly nature of these vehicles being their most exploited feature in advertising. Nissan is going down the same path with a new campaign for the fully-electric Leaf entitled “Gas Powered Everything”, in which the company mocks the internal combustion engine by imagining a strange world where all appliances run on gas.

The result is a funny commercial in which people have to put up with gas-powered alarm-clocks, microwave ovens, computers and many more appliances. Even the Chevrolet Volt becomes a subject of joke for being a gas-electric hybrid. But we can't help but wonder: isn't Nissan's approach a little hypocritical? It's not like their range includes electric cars alone...

Renault’s Dacia Duster “No Limit” Racer gets 850HP V6 Sourced from the Nissan GT-R!

Following an early reveal on racing driver Jean-Philippe Dayraut's website, Renault today released official photos of its PikesPeak contender, the 850HP Dacia Duster “No Limit”. The name comes from the “Unlimited” class of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, which imposes no restrictions on the size or power output of the engine, maximum power or torque. In addition, there are no restrictions concerning the transmission or the aerodynamic characteristics. Looking at the size of the Duster's rear wing, it is obvious the car competes in the “Unlimited” class.

The one-off prototype was built by Tork Engineering (which handled the design, production, assembly and development) and Sodemo (engine), in association with Renault Sport Technologies, which supplied certain components.

SPIED: Nissan Testing New 2012 Sunny / Versa Sedan in Europe

Our spy photographers have captured a lightly camouflaged prototype of the freshly revealed in the USA and China, Nissan Versa / Sunny series, during testing in Sierra Nevada, Spain. The prototype was a right-hand drive example with test license plates from Spain.

Aside from the odd-looking exhaust tail pipe that extends all the way to the outer corner of the rear bumper and possibly the headlamp and tail lamp designs, we didn’t notice any other styling differences compared to the North American Versa and the China market Sunny models.

Hyundai Set to Become Sixth Biggest Automaker in the U.S. In 2011

In the realm of U.S. automotive sales, 8% is a magic number. When an automaker hits 8%, they know they’ve become one of the big guns. Ford, Chevrolet, Toyota, Honda, Dodge and Nissan have all made it, and 2011 is expected to be Hyundai’s year.

So sayeth market research firm Polk, and I’m tempted to agree. Hyundai and its partner-brand / internal rival Kia have steadily been evolving into truly world-class carmakers. They’re keenly priced, inoffensive to look at and comprehensively covered quality-wise – everything the vast majority of new car buyers want in this day and age.

Top Gear vs. Electric Cars Part Two: Nissan Leaf Runs of out Electric Juice…

Lately, it seems that pushing an out-of-juice electric car is quickly becoming a trademark of Britain’s popular Top Gear TV series. After the Tesla Motors row, it seems another EV will be featured in the show while being pushed. This time it's the Nissan Leaf, whose batteries ran dry while being driven by Jeremy Clarkson.

Fortunately, one of the many witnesses of the event caught Clarkson and James May trying to find an outlet to plug for the Leaf on camera. The two TV hosts were filming a test drive with the Nissan Leaf and the Peugeot iOn for the next episode of the show. After looking for outlets in the park, the crew eventually plugged the Leaf in at the UK's University of Lincoln.

Toyota Overtakes BMW as World's Most Valuable Brand

The BrandZ Top 100 annual study revealed that Toyota is once again the world's most valuable auto brand, after losing the position last year to BMW due to the massive recall campaign. Toyota saw an 11 percent increase in its brand value, which is now rated at $24.2 billion (€16.85 billion). The research company Millward Brown, whose global brand director said Toyota’s recall had not affected consumers’ confidence in the carmaker, compiled the ranking. Read more »

Girl Power: Meet Japan’s Drifting Lady, Sumika Kubokawa

Who ever said that drifting is only for men surely hasn’t seen Sumika Kubokawa in action. The 27 year old from Japan is a member of Team Orange, one of the leading drift teams in the D1 Grand Prix Series, and as you can see for yourself in the video after the jump, she certainly knows her way behind the steering wheel.

In her interview with Driftcolors, Sumika says she is an avid fan of the Nissan 180SX, which was sold in North America as the 240SX and in some other countries under the 200SX name. Sumika also said she street drifted for a brief period when she was younger but was caught and hasn’t done it again. Check out her interview as well as the first and second episode of the series after the break.

2011 Nissan Rogue SL Review & Test Drive

The all-new 2011 Nissan Rogue has amazingly bridged the drivability of a car and added practicality of an SUV without compromising fuel economy or price of admission. Since its introduction as a 2008 model 4 years ago, the Nissan Rogue has been a great conciliation for families looking for an economical crossover that fits their budget. For 2011 Nissan continues this perfect marriage with newly refreshed styling and some extra luxury amenities to boot.
All wrapped up in a crossover fashion, the 2011 Nissan Rogue attempts to avoid being mistaken for a smaller version of the Nissan Murano. Technically the Rogue is built off of the Nissan Sentra’s platform instead of the Murano’s Altima platform. However, the new Rogue, despite its smaller size when compared to the Murano, provides SUV-like high seating positions and a sporty ride.

Built directly from a car chassis, the Nissan Rogue has virtually nothing in common with a truck. Most manufacturers have been swaying away from truck-like crossovers, and the design of the Rogue is a good thing especially when it comes to the car-like feel, good handling characteristics and decent fuel economy.
The new Nissan Rogue provides a sporty ride giving you plenty of feedback from poorly paved surfaces. Then again, there is a slight disconnect from the road when it comes to its numb steering feel. Deception is not Nissan’s forte but if it were not for the high seating positions, you would think that you are in a new Nissan Sentra.
My new Nissan Rogue SL test vehicle was surprisingly zippy for a crossover. Traditionally Nissan has some of the best Continuously Variable Transmissions in the automotive market, which really helps transition the Rogue’s 170 horsepower and 175 pounds-feet of torque from its 2.5-liter 4cyl engine. The Nissan Rogue has its sweet spots in the power band but unfortunately lags at times at some highway speeds. Initial acceleration does not get serious until the CVT decides to let the engine get into its power band a couple seconds later, which slightly hinders overall acceleration. The 2011 Nissan Rogue has an estimated 0-60 mph time of 8.6 seconds, which is on par with much of its competition such as the Honda CR-V, 4-cyl Toyota Rav4, and 4-cyl Chevy Equinox for example. A V6 option may have been the ticket to making the Rogue more desirable for enthusiasts.

The new 2011 Nissan Rogue receives some additional luxury treatment when the appropriate packages are selected. My SL trimmed test vehicle adds to the base S trim level with HID manual-leveling headlights, leather seating surfaces (heated front), auto-dimming review mirror, auto climate-control, Bose stereo system with Bluetooth and GPS navigation, moonroof, and 18-inch alloy wheels.

The Nissan Rogue SL has a lot of plastic interior bits but they do not appear to look cheap which is a good thing.  Surprisingly the dashboard was padded and buttons were soft to the touch. The rather small navigation LCD screen was shockingly easy to see especially with the new auto-zoom function. As you drive faster the navigation unit zooms out, and the slower you go, the more it will zoom in to identify side-roads. The unit is similar to what Volkswagen currently offers in vehicles such as the Golf and Jetta. The auto-climate control unit is very simplistic and controlled by only three dials. Intelligent keyless entry and push-button start are also nice additions to make the Rogue feel more like a luxury vehicle.
With gas prices continually on a surge, vehicles like the Nissan Rogue provide consumers with additional cargo space while not compromising fuel economy. The Rogue has an EPA estimated 22mpg city and 28mpg highway figures. I was able to get about 26mpg on my 25 mile commute consisting of mostly highway driving. Around town I saw a consistent figure of 23 mpg.

“Simple” is the Nissan Rogue’s middle name considering how Nissan’s styling is subdued in this small crossover. Although Nissan offers several crossover choices, other ‘smaller’ offerings from Nissan for utilitarians leave you with a choice of a boxy Nissan Cube or funky-styled Juke. There is no doubt about the styling characteristics of the Rogue having several elements taken from other Nissan vehicles such as the Altima, Murano, and even the 370Z. Those in the market for a crossover don’t want boring or overly stated designs that scream ‘look at me I’m insecure’. What they seek is something Rogue and Nissan has just the thing.
Cargo space opens up to only 58 cubic-feet, which is slightly less than some of the Rogue’s competitors. However, the Rogue offers the most ‘car-like’ ride out of the bunch and aims to make buyers happy with the option of a few luxury amenities.

My loaded Nissan Rogue SL has an estimated as-tested price of $28,000 but reserves a starting price of $21,210 for the base model. The Nissan Rogue might be the clearer choice for a more conservative individual but still satisfies any appetite for a stylish yet economical crossover.

Our Nissan Leaf Gets a House Call

The Cars.com Nissan Leaf has received a Vehicle Control Module update, its first service call since we purchased it in February. Our Chevrolet Volt received similar updates in March, though that resulted from a check-engine light.
The Leaf service was prompted by a notice we received from Nissan citing a "diagnostic programming error" on some Leafs that triggers a false warning about the air-conditioning system. In these cases, the cars sometimes failed to restart after being turned off. We experienced no such problem, but we also haven't had the luxury of requiring air conditioning since we bought the car.
Perhaps more important than the air-conditioning fix is a software update intended to help the onboard computer more accurately predict range. As we reported in our winter wrapup, our car has been wildly erratic.
A Nissan technician performed the update at the location of our choosing — in the garage at Cars.com HQ — a courtesy afforded all Leaf owners, not just us. The update process involved plugging a laptop computer into our Leaf's OBD (onboard diagnostic) port under the dashboard. After establishing communication, our technician, David, began the process of transferring the updated software to our Leaf's VCM.
It took about 50 minutes, as promised, and our Leaf is now ready for summer and, we hope, more accurate range predictions. We'll report on Twitter at @CarsComGreen as soon as we see results.

New York City Picks Nissan NV200 Small Van as Future Yellow Cab

After considering a large number of proposals, New York City’s Taxi and Limousine Commission announced today that it has selected a small van from Nissan, called the NV200, as the Ford Crown Victoria‘s heir apparent as the yellow cab for New York City. This will give Nissan an exclusive 10-year contract to supply New York City taxi operators with vehicles.
The selection process began in 2009, when Ford’s Crown Vic went into full zombie mode. Since then, companies operating yellow cabs in the five boroughs have been free to supply politically correct vehicles; most are Ford Escape hybrids, and the rest of the city’s roughly 13,000 yellow cabs are comprised of Volkswagen Jetta TDIs, Toyota Siennas, Priuses, Nissan Altima hybrids, and even the occasional Lexus RX400h or Toyota Highlander hybrid.
Nissan’s NV200 beat out the similarly sized Ford Transit Connect, as well as a Turkish company’s clean-sheet proposal; the latter company, Karsan, even suggested building its van in Brooklyn. While the NV200 isn’t sold in the U.S. in any form, Nissan has said it plans to expand its van offerings here beyond the hideously truckish NV. Unlike the body-on-frame NV, however, the NV200 is car-based, and is a fairly conventional vehicle in markets like Europe, where small vans are popular.
Interior of the European Nissan NV200. You can fuhgedabout ours having a stick.

We expect yellow NV200s to begin hitting New York’s streets in 2014, and they will proliferate as the existing motley collection of taxis wear out. To avoid the 25 percent chicken tax on trucks, Nissan may want to build the NV200 in the U.S.; this especially makes sense, as we fully expect Nissan to offer the small van to retail consumers. It’s also unclear what will power the NV200. In Europe, the van is offered with a choice of tiny gas or diesel engines. Neither of these is suitable or economical for Nissan to bring to the U.S., so we expect that the company will install a four-cylinder engine already familiar to the American market, like the 1.8-liter powerplant used in the Cube, Sentra, and Versa.
While 13,000 vehicles isn’t a tremendous number, New York City’s taxi choices influence fleet selections for other cities as well, as the big companies that operate regionally like to have a standard vehicle and set of replacement parts and tools.
Unfortunately, neither Nissan nor the City of New York has given any impression that there will be any changes to the incredibly annoying video clips forced on rear-seat taxi passengers.

Nissan Brazil Strikes Again with an Ad for a Family Minivan that You’re Never Going See in the U.S. [NSFW]

Back in March, Nissan do Brasil aired a commercial, which drew the wrath of Ford’s local arm for making claims that the Detroit automaker charges customers too much for its family models. But while Ford’s people only saw a Focus and a pair of rappers dressed as engineers chanting about the money they made by overpricing the hatchback, some viewers were also captivated by the curvalicious bikini-clad models…

Now, Nissan of Brazil returns with a new TV spot, this time for the Livina 7-seater compact minivan. While the Japanese carmaker avoids referring to a specific rival, the theme appears to be similar: scantily dressed female models dancing provocatively and a tagline aimed at the competition. And oh; towards the end of the clip you may notice the Livina and young family of four (not that we’re complaining about the appearance of the ladies…).

2012 Nissan maxima

                                                       2012 Nissan maxima
When you think about high performance sedan Nissan maxima will always come to your mind as a brilliant option. No one can deny the fact that this Japanese vehicle stands out in comparison with other similar vehicles. But Accord will definitely come before Nissan Maxima. Talking about any radical change in 2012 Nissan Maxima then you won’t be able to find it. It is much similar to Maxima SE, Maxima GXE and Maxima GLE trims.
As far as the mechanical changes are concerned there aren’t any big mechanical changes in 2012 Nissan Maxima. It will be outfitted with 3.5L DOHC V6 engine which comprises of 24 valves with variable timings. This engine is expected to produce 255 hp and 246 foot pound torque. With four speed auto transmission 2012 Nissan Maxima will drive on front wheels. Though there is a likelihood of integration of six speed manual in SE model of 2012 Nissan Maxima. For smooth drive experience it uses the continuously variable transmission. The list of safety features includes improved air bags, Traction control system, anti-lock brakes and electronic Brake force Distribution. Probably 2012 Nissan Maxima will include sport tuned suspension.
Talking about interiors of 2012 Nissan Maxima it includes center armrest whose height is adjustable. In addition to this vehicle has 60/40 split-rear seat to increase cargo space, low fuel warning, tachometer, and trip computer, outside temperature measurement, auto-dimming rearview mirror and Bose audio system.
Just like previous versions 2012 Nissan Maxima has keyless access, power sunroof, leather wrapped steering wheels and power front seats. iPod interface, USB, Bluetooth Wireless connectivity etc. these added features are believed to be part of 3.5 SV model.
